Tsunami in Indonesia kills over 100

A Tsunami caused by a magnitude 7.7 earthquake has taken over 100 lives.

The Tsunami struck off the coast of Sumatra near the Matawi islands.  A number of villages were swept away by 3m highwaves.

Many more are missing and a rescue operation has been launched.

With communications down and heavy rain hampering access, the exact extent of the damage and numbers affected is not yet known.

7.5 Magnitude Earthquake Strikes Indonesia

A 7.5 magnitude earthquake struck Indonesia with initial concerns over a possible Tsunami.

The earthquake hit the KEPULAUAN MENTAWAI REGION 500 miles north of Jakarta.

A magnitude 5 aftershock followed the first ‘quake and no major damage or casualties were reported.

The Tsunami warning was also recinded.

Magnitude 7 Earthquake hits Christchurch, New Zealand

A magnitude 7 earthquake has struck the city of Christchurch in New Zealand leaving damage to many buildings and a series of aftershocks has caused wide spread damage in what is being claimed as the largest Earthquake to hit New Zealand in 80 years.

The earthquake hit 19 miles west of Christchurch in the South Island of New Zealand.

Currently no fatalaties have been reported and only a few injuries although the damage caused has been extremely severe with 400,000 people being left without power and many building and infrastructures affected by the intial quake and the aftershocks.

Hurricane Earl Weakens as it hits North Carolina coast

Hurricane Earl, the fifth tropical storm, third hurricane of the 2010 Altantic hurricane season which was initially a category 4 hurricane, weakened to a Category 2 by the time it reached the shores of North Carolina.

The storms were still strong enough to cause power outages and some minor flooding but the amount of damage  was much less than previously thought.

It is estimated to have caused damages in the region of $150 million along the coast of Eastern United States.
